A New School Year Filled with Endless Possibilities
Dear Ellicottville Central School Community,
There is something special about the beginning of a school year. September brings a fresh start, new goals, and the excitement of seeing our hallways filled with students once again. After joining Ellicottville midway through last year, I am especially grateful to begin this school year with all of you from day one. There is a great sense of optimism that comes with a new beginning, and I truly believe this year holds so many great opportunities for our students, staff, families, and community.
As we look ahead, one of my goals is to continue building a school culture where everyone feels welcome, supported, and proud to be part of Ellicottville. We want our students to love coming to school, our staff to feel valued and inspired, and our families to know they are important partners in their children's education. When someone walks through our doors, I want them to feel the warmth, kindness, and pride that make this district so special. My hope is that students, parents, staff, and visitors all leave thinking, "I love it here!"
Another important priority this year is taking a thoughtful look at our finances. Like many districts across New York, we are facing the reality that state aid is no longer keeping pace with rising costs. That means we must think differently about how we use our resources while continuing to provide an exceptional education for our students. These conversations are never easy, but they are necessary. By planning carefully today, we can protect the opportunities our students deserve for years to come.
This year we will begin our Strategic Planning process. This important work will allow us to reflect on where we are today, envision where we want to be tomorrow, and develop a shared roadmap for the future. Together with students, staff, families, Board of Education members, and community stakeholders, we will identify priorities that strengthen academic achievement, support students' social and emotional well-being, and prepare every learner for success beyond graduation. Strategic planning is about building on our strengths while thoughtfully preparing for the opportunities and challenges ahead.
One area I am particularly excited about is increasing family engagement. We have wonderful parents, grandparents, alumni, and community members who care deeply about our students, and we want to create even more opportunities for you to be part of school life. Throughout the year, we'll share volunteer opportunities and invite you to become involved in classrooms, events, and activities. Whether you have an hour to spare or simply want to attend a school event, your presence makes a difference. Our students benefit when they build relationships with our community.
I also hope you’ll join us for our Back-to-School Open House on Wednesday, September 2, from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. You may notice that we are holding Open House before school begins this year rather than later in the fall. We want to give students and families a chance to reconnect with familiar faces, meet teachers and classmates, visit classrooms, and feel comfortable in the building before the first day arrives. A new school year always brings some excitement along with a few uncertainties, and we hope this evening helps ease those first-day nerves and makes everyone feel ready and excited to return. We’ll also enjoy a picnic dinner and some time to simply catch up as a school community. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone and kicking off another great year at ECS!
Every September reminds us that anything is possible. There will be challenges along the way, but there will also be countless moments that remind us why Ellicottville is such a special place.
